Reading our new copy of “The Forms of Our Letters”

Reading our new copy of Victor Hammer’s little booklet “The Forms of Our Letters”, I’m amazed at how easy it is to read text set in the typeface American Uncial. The forms were often distracting, but reading speed was about normal. It’s also remarkable to see his use of the term “non-Latin” from 1955. He is literally speaking of all languages that are not Latin (as opposed to the current usage which refers to other scripts than the Latin alphabet). This may be the earliest use of non-Latin I’ve seen so far tho. Any other leads you have as to the use and evolution of the term non-Latin would be appreciated!

Colorful letters!
9 November, 2017

We have a fridge full of alphabet magnets… They had gotten quite dusty so here they are getting a bath. The layers of letters in a bucket of water were bright and fun.

Colorful letters! I always enjoy a nice R.

Slowly cataloging our library

Over the last couple months we’ve been slowly cataloging all our type books with Bookpedia. So far we are very happy with he app and would recommend it. But cataloging takes so much time… So far we ‘only’ have 231 books entered, which is almost half of the main typographic reference section. There are still specimens, periodicals, and other misc books to go. It’s slightly depressing to see them all fitting on one screen, because it belittles the actual mass. In real life these books take up two long shelves — about 16 feet long.

Meet Nukta, the latest addition to our family…

Meet Nukta, the latest addition to our family and team. She was born outside our building about 7 weeks ago and has been inside with us for the last two weeks. So far her hobbies include acrobatic jumping, biting her own tail, sitting on my shoulder while I work, and waking us up every hour throughout the night. Her and our other cat Cosette get along well 😺
