Israeli Ironworks
7 January, 2018

These images come from both Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. It was astounding how many different designs there were on all these metal castings in the ground. I didn’t even photograph all the different manholes (I’ve decided to generally refer to this genre now as ‘ironworks’ to be more inclusive because not all are strictly manholes, there are other covers and grates that could fall in this category), and surprisingly I only shot a couple duplicates. Many of them are very interesting with striking graphics, unique type, and 1 – 4 scripts/languages on them.

Some Signs from Jerusalem
2 January, 2018

We just got back from a great trip to Israel, so the next several posts will be some images from the trip.

We had the occasion to go thanks to a call Kimya received from the Bezalel Academy in Jerusalem. She was invited to be one of 6 Indians for to conduct a week-long workshop for the school’s “India Design Week”. Naturally, her theme was typography – her students first learned the basics of the Devanagari script then made a typographic object with bilingual Hebrew and Devanagari lettering.

I didn’t have much to do with the workshop, so I spent my time working on a new Hebrew typeface and wandering around clicking photos all over the city. Here are just a few shop signs from Jerusalem to get started.

Archivio Tipografico Prints
13 December, 2017

Archivio Tipografico is really great. Based in Turin, Italy, they are making some very cool prints and are super friendly to deal with. I ordered a copy of this awesome eBoy print called Pixel Press. It’s a simple idea that’s ridiculously complicated to execute. The posters are letter press printed, the pixel squares are printed using individually set square sorts, and the five colors means that each poster had to go through the press five times. This production of this alone is impressive, not to even mention the fun illustration of a print shop. Here’s a great video showing the making of it.

There was a problem with the shipping and unfortunately the posters arrived very seriously damaged. Archivio Tipografico was super kind to send a new copy that reached in perfect condition. They also generously threw a bonus poster to make up for the trouble! This one is composed of type all designed by Alessandro Butti. It fits perfectly with some of our other letterpresses alphabet posters.

A peek into our studio

I’ve not shared many photos from our current studio in Mumbai. Here’s a small pano of our two main rooms – the library and studio. We hosted two classes of students last week, this is one of the groups as they were browsing the books and archives.
