Chandrakanta Scans
30 April, 2014

Screen Shot 2014-04-30 at 10.27.41

I found these scans by accident today from the Digital Library of India. It’s from the novel Chandrakanta – “considered to be the first work of prose in the modern Hindi language.” I love not only the graphic quality of the terrible black and white bitmap but also the title lettering. The main text is apparently set in metal type, even tho the book is supposedly from 1997. My guess is that it is a photographic reproduction of an earlier edition.

Letter Recognition – Latin vs Devanagari
9 April, 2014

legibility-latin

You are probably familiar already with the fact that in the Latin script, the top halves of letters are more important for character recognition than the bottom halves.

The question was just posed by @Tosche_E: how does this apply to other scripts such as Devanagari? My quick reply was that it doesn’t work for Devanagari at least. The middle section of the letters is the most important, but there is too much other information above and below the letters that you simply can’t ignore.

Typographic Thali
10 March, 2014

Not exactly breaking news, but I’ve never gotten around to posting them here.

Typographic Thali was the final exhibition at the Mota Italic gallery Aug+Sept 2013. It was comprised of items from my personal collection of type-related finds from India. On display were hundreds of items including: Bollywood posters, newspapers, books, toys, metal signs, metal type, type specimens, money, new and vintage hand-painted objects, and hundreds of photos. It was one of the most popular exhibitions that we held in that space… Everyone was inspired and interested to learn more about Indian and it’s diverse writing systems.

Pizza Hut Devanagari
27 February, 2014

pizza hut devanagari

pizza hut latin

I’m not entirely sure how I feel about this Pizza Hut logo adaptation to Devanagari. It is clearly much much better than average here, but it doesn’t completely fit with the Latin counterpart. At first glance I enjoyed it quite a bit (especially the funky ह), but the more I look at it the less I think it matches well enough. Still, props for trying!

Dadar Textile Shop Signs
26 February, 2014

I haven’t spent so much time in the Dadar neighborhood in Mumbai. But the other day I was passing through and could help but admire the sheer quantity of gorgeous shop signs. Really, there were so many, and this is only some from (basically) part of one street. The area is full of textile shops and wholesalers, so all these signs are thematically related to fabrics.
