Typodarium 2014 Unboxing and Showcase
27 August, 2013

The folks behind the unbelievable Typodarium calendar have done it again. For the sixth edition, hundreds of designers have graciously typeset 377 fonts for this neatly packaged project (edition of 10,000 copies).

As a thank for for contributing, during the first four years of the project participating designers received a complimentary copy of the calendar. But suddenly in 2013, MAGMA Brand Design and Verlag Hermann Schmidt said it was too expensive to show their appreciation to the designers. So they did nothing.

For 2014, they attempted to avoid some of the hate mail and bad karma received in 2013 and again sent the contributors a free calendar. Some are undoubtedly thankful for this gesture, but I for one am not impressed. Yes, it’s nice to have a copy, but to me this one is useless because it doesn’t come with a box… Maybe that sounds trite, but the box is a unique selling point of this calendar – you are supposed to tear off the specimens each day, and collect them in the handy box. I have done exactly this since 2010 and have actually kept all of them. For 2014 I will neither be using the calendar nor submitting fonts to Typodarium again.

Mota Italic Postcard №2

Mota Italic Postcard №2

Early 2013’s latest printed type promotional piece. This is another A5 postcard with an even more packed selection of current typefaces. This will certainly be the last postcard where I attempt to show all of our fonts on just 1/2 a sheet of paper.

Mota Italic Printed Specimen №1

Mota Italic's First Specimen Book

This was Mota Italic’s first printed specimen book printed in 2010. At 40 pages, with one typeface per page, the concept was quite unconventional making it look different from the typical type specimens one sees. While the novelty of its originality took it far, it did somewhat lack in the area of proper marketing and showing some of the features and infos that potential customers might have been interested in. Still, it was fun to make at to read through.

Schrift in Form 2
21 September, 2010

I was honored to be invited by Peter and Tanja of Typosition to participate in the second “Schrift in Form”. Two A1 posters for each typeface/designer were submitted: first was the designer’s favorite recipe designed how they wished (with a new typeface), and the second was a poster simply showing the character set.

My submission pimping my still unfinished Gemma type family, was of “Sonja’s Weird Salad” (invented by Sonja, named by me). It’s awesome, really. It’s so good I want to share it with you. Try it out!

One small bit of advise: The quantities of ingredients are approximate. You may want to adjust them somewhat.
